What is the DNS?

DNS stands for the Domain Name Service. DNS is a set of software and protocols that translate a domain name like www.webyourcompany.com into an IP address such as 192.168.0.1 . A request for such a translation is called a DNS query. DNS queries are sent to DNS servers registered for a domain name.

Web browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer generate queries whenever they browse addresses like http://www.webyourcompany.com.
